By the end of 1977, residential development had started on the site of the Island Hotel and Bowling Green when Edinburgh Developments acquired the site for building18 houses. Six were nearing completion and advertised for sale by Aclands at £45,000 when the developers ran into difficulty and the Official Receiver offered them for sale. However, there were difficulties for visitors reaching the site and Snapper's company, Ashcastle Co. Ltd, took over the development and completed the marketing. It was quite late in the day that the developers recognised the need for a new river wall and installed the present sheet piling.
